UAE tax workflows need sound data and a named reviewer

Prepare your UAE VAT return in Xero, then submit through EmaraTax.

Xero is listed by the UAE Federal Tax Authority as tax accounting software. Businesses still need to apply the right treatment, check the source records and review each return before submission.

A dependable monthly or quarterly rhythm

Review, reconcile, investigate, file.

Build a repeatable close process so VAT reporting is connected to the underlying accounting records and supporting documents.

Keep tax settings controlled

Review tax rates and transaction coding with an authorised finance or tax reviewer. Restrict who can change settings and document approved updates.

Reconcile the period

Reconcile bank accounts, review receivables and payables, and resolve suspense or uncoded transactions before preparing VAT reports.

Check exceptions

Inspect unusual, zero-rated, exempt, reverse-charge and import-related items as applicable. Agree evidence and treatment with your tax adviser.

Review and upload to EmaraTax

Compare report totals to ledgers and source documents. Obtain the required approval, upload the reviewed return through EmaraTax and retain the filing confirmation and evidence.

Separate accounting and structured exchange

VAT reporting and e-Invoicing work together

These processes use related transaction data but serve different purposes. A correct VAT report does not alone prove that e-Invoices are structured correctly, and an accepted e-Invoice does not alone confirm the accounting treatment is right.

Accounting record

VAT reporting

Summarises transactions recorded and coded in the Xero organisation to help prepare UAE VAT returns. Review the report, reconciliations and tax treatment before filing.

Invoice exchange

UAE e-Invoicing

Exchanges prescribed structured invoice data through the UAE e-Invoicing framework and an Accredited Service Provider. It involves participant identifiers, required fields, network routing and message responses.

Shared controls

Data governance

Both processes benefit from accurate legal names, addresses, tax identifiers, invoice dates, line details, rates, credit notes and a clear audit trail.

Do not assume VAT TRN and e-Invoicing TIN mean the same field. The Ministry’s mandatory-field guide describes the e-Invoicing participant TIN separately from the seller tax identifier/TRN. Confirm the mapping for each legal entity with your ASP and tax adviser.
Xero capability

Prepare in Xero, submit through EmaraTax

Xero’s UAE product information describes mapping financial data to VAT201, producing Arabic and English reports, and generating an FTA Audit File. Xero instructs users to review and download the populated return, then upload it to EmaraTax. Xero is listed in the FTA Tax Accounting Software Register.

Our implementation support

Make the close process visible

We can review tax coding and reporting routines within an agreed accounting engagement, document the monthly or quarterly review steps and identify records that need specialist tax advice. We support the Xero workflow and agreed accounting process; tax advice outside the engagement is scoped separately.

Illustrative Xero VAT review · AED

Follow two entries to a review figure.

This fictional example demonstrates the arithmetic behind coded transactions. It is not a VAT201 box mapping, tax determination or filing result.

Sales · standard-rated assumption

Customer invoice

Service value AED 10,000 + illustrative 5% VAT of AED 500 = AED 10,500 receivable.

Purchases · recovery assumed

Business purchase

Purchase value AED 2,000 + illustrative 5% VAT of AED 100 = AED 2,100 payable. Input tax recovery depends on eligibility and evidence.

Simple subtotal only

Before other activity

AED 500 output VAT − AED 100 assumed recoverable input VAT = AED 400. This excludes every other transaction, adjustment and VAT201 requirement.

Review before you file. Confirm tax codes, tax dates, recoverability, credit notes, imports, reverse-charge items, exempt and zero-rated activity, reconcile the period, then review the Xero VAT report and supporting evidence. Download the populated VAT201 and upload it to EmaraTax; retain the return and filing confirmation.
